Lamu Old Town is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are almost no cars on the island, so people get around on foot, by donkey or by boat, and life moves at a slow pace.
Things to do in Lamu
- Old Town walks: narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, mosques and Swahili houses.
- Dhow trips: sail at sunset or spend a day on the water.
- Shela Beach: a wide, quiet beach with a small village behind it.
- Culture: Swahili food, crafts and local festivals.
Best time to visit
December to March is hot and calm, and July to October is cooler. Check current travel advice for the north coast before you book.
Lamu works well after a safari. See Masai Mara or ask us to plan a safari and Lamu combination.
