Why combine Malindi and Watamu?
Malindi gives you history, marine adventure and a lively coastal atmosphere. Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve is Kenya’s first marine protected area, established in 1968 and later designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and lagoons. Watamu adds pristine beaches, reef-protected lagoons and Mida Creek, a mangrove ecosystem that, with nearby Whale Island, supports more than 200 species of local and migratory birds.
Marine life in the area includes sea turtles, dolphins, rays, reef sharks and many reef fish. Always use qualified operators and follow marine-park rules for water activities.
Getting there
Depending on the package you can travel by road, by air or a combination. Malindi Airport provides air access, and travellers using the SGR can connect through Mombasa and continue by road.
Optional experiences
Snorkelling, scuba diving, boat excursions, a Mida Creek dhow experience, Watamu and Malindi Marine National Parks, Gede Ruins, the Vasco da Gama Pillar, beach dining, water sports and an Arabuko-Sokoke Forest excursion. Marine activities, park fees and optional excursions should be confirmed when booking because costs and availability vary.
