Mombasa is Kenya’s main coastal city and port, with a long Swahili, Arab and Portuguese history. It works as both a gateway to the coast and a destination in its own right.
Things to do in Mombasa
- Fort Jesus: a 16th-century Portuguese fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the harbour.
- Old Town: narrow streets, carved doors, spice stalls and Swahili architecture.
- Haller Park: a rehabilitated quarry turned wildlife park with giraffe, hippo and tortoises.
- Beaches: Nyali, Bamburi and the quieter south coast around Diani.
Best time to visit
Expect hot, humid weather all year. December to March and July to October are drier and more comfortable.
Getting there
You can fly from Nairobi, or ride the Nairobi to Mombasa railway. Mombasa is often combined with Tsavo, Diani and Watamu. Request a quote for a coast holiday.
