Watamu

  • Best time to visit: December to March and July to October for calm seas and good visibility
  • Getting there: About 2 hours by road north of Mombasa, or a short flight to Malindi airport followed by a 30 minute transfer

Watamu is a relaxed beach town on Kenya’s north coast, known for its clear water, coral gardens and marine life. Its bays are protected by the Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve, which makes it one of the best places on the coast for snorkelling and diving.

Things to do in Watamu

  • Marine park: snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat over coral gardens.
  • Turtle conservation: local projects protect nesting and rescued sea turtles.
  • Gede Ruins: a mysterious Swahili town hidden in the forest.
  • Arabuko Sokoke Forest: birdlife and small forest mammals close to the coast.
  • Watersports: kitesurfing, diving and deep-sea fishing in season.

Best time to visit

December to March and July to October are the best periods. The rains in April and May are the quietest months.
