Zanzibar is an island off the coast of Tanzania with white-sand beaches, turquoise water and a rich Swahili and Omani heritage. It is a popular way to end a Tanzania or Kenya safari.
Things to do in Zanzibar
- Stone Town: a UNESCO World Heritage Site of old merchant houses, markets and the waterfront.
- Spice tours: visit plantations to see cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg growing.
- Jozani Forest: home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
- Beaches: Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, Paje and Jambiani on the east coast.
- Ocean activities: snorkelling, diving, dhow cruises and kitesurfing.
Best time to visit
June to October and December to February are the driest. The long rains in April and May are the quietest period.
